Parliament has two chambers. The National People's Assembly (al-Majlis al-Sha'abi al-Watani/Assemblé Populaire Nationale) has 380 members, elected for a five year term in multi-seat constitituencies by proportional representation. Eight seats in the national assembly are reserved for Algerians abroad. The National Council (al-Majlis al-Umma/Conseil de la Nation) has 144 members, 96 members elected by communal councils and 48 members appointed by the president.

Notes about the Algeria Elections:
The elections have been boycotted by the Mouvement pour la démocratie en Algérie (Movement for Democracy in Algeria, moderate islamist). The Front Islamique du Salut (Islamic Salvation Front, violent islamist) is illegal.

Six of the seven presidential candidates officially withdrew before election day. Abdelaziz BOUTEFLIKA became the only remaining candidate in the race.
